Bridal Book Club – May – Mansfield Park

“A fondness for reading, properly directed, must be an education in itself.”

Jane Austen – Mansfield Park

It’s Mansfield Park month!

Mansfield Park, Jane Austen Bridal Book Club

In the interests of full disclosure, I have a lot of feelings about Mansfield Park.

I did my uni dissertation on Austen adaptations (because of course I did!) and I chose Mansfield Park to focus on. I picked it because I liked it the least, I’d never read it and I forgot it was one of the longest books! It’s fair to say that it did make me appreciate Mansfield Park a lot more.

Straight off – I don’t like any of the adaptations, except for the old BBC one. But it isn’t a story which lends itself to modern re-tellings, I don’t think. Of all the Austens, I’d say it’s the most of its time.

I’m not trying to put you off, because I really feel that Mansfield Park is the most undervalued of Austen’s novels. It’s definitely worth a read! Here’s the blurb for you:

The novel tells the story of Fanny Price, starting when her overburdened, impoverished family sends her at age ten to live in the household of her wealthy aunt and uncle; it follows her development and concludes in early adulthood.

From early on critical reception has been diverse. To some, the heroine Fanny Price was appealing; to others appalling. Some saw the novel as straightforward; others as intensely ironic with many disguised allusions. Some have emphasised the novel’s traditional values; others have emphasised radical and feminist interpretations. Was Austen for or against theatrical performance? What part does religion and ordination play in the novel?

That’s a lot of questions for a blurb to ask! Hold on to your bonnets, it’s going to be an interesting one!
